First cup win for Keane
FT: Nottingham Forest 1 Sunderland 2 (AET)
David Healy’s extra-time strike sent Sunderland into the Carling Cup third round as Roy Keane recorded his first cup win as a manager against former club Nottingham Forest.
Visiting striker Djibril Cisse came closest in the first half as he cut through Forest’s defence and fired against the post.
Rob Earnshaw put the Coca-Cola Championship side ahead with a superb free-kick on the hour mark but Phil Bardsley forced the game into extra-time from close range late on.
Summer signing Healy then slotted home before Luke Chambers blew a glorious chance to take the game to penalties when his header hit the crossbar.
Sunderland then went ahead three minutes into extra-time when Smith parried Reid’s shot and Healy reacted quickest, making no mistake in opening his account as a Sunderland player.
Forest battled hard to find an equaliser but failed to work visiting goalkeeper Craig Gordon in the first half of extra-time.
But it was all Forest after the break and Chambers was gifted the perfect opportunity to level but his free header came crashing back off the crossbar.
