Carew sees Premier appeal

Aston Villa striker John Carew has admitted he would welcome the challenge from any new players brought in by Martin O’Neill – including Thierry Henry and Peter Crouch.

Henry is unsettled at Barcelona and being linked with a move back to the Barclays Premier League while Liverpool star Crouch has been the subject of speculation about a possible return to Villa.

Carew has been in excellent form since his move from Lyon 14 months ago and scored his 11th and 12th goals of the campaign during the 5-1 demolition of Birmingham on Sunday.

But he would be up for the fight if O’Neill brings in even more firepower to complement himself, Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Carew said: “Am I surprised Thierry Henry wants to come back to Premier League after one season? If he is not happy over there, and it is a different culture, then it is up to him.

“I was very happy there when I was playing there in Spain with Valencia but, when you are used to the Premier League and playing here, then it is still the biggest league, the biggest in terms of interest.

“It is the best place to play football and the best place to enjoy the football I think.

“I understand Henry wants to come back. Maybe he is not having the easiest situation in his present life. That is important as well.

“Barcelona are also playing a different way and Henry is maybe playing a different style and not as a forward. At Arsenal he was maybe the next player in the world.

“Would you mind playing with him at Villa next season? Get him here!”

As regards the speculation linking Crouch with a move to Villa, Carew said: “I would welcome any good player to come here. The more good players, the better for the team.

“The more good players, the stronger you are during a whole season.”

Carew admitted he is still on a high after the demolition of Birmingham kept Villa on course for a European spot.

He said: “It was the best experience since I came here. The stadium was electric from the first whistle. I’ve played in a couple of derbies before but that was something special.

“The fans were amazing even when we came out for the warm-up. I had a good feeling before the game and I was sure it was going to be a great day for Villa.

“There was a lot at stake for both sides and that can sometimes make it more difficult with more tension but we continued like we have been going in the last few games.

“We have now scored 15 goals in three games which must be some sort of record. Now we want to keep it going and push for Europe.”
