Feyenoord were effectively eliminated from the Eredivisie title race today after a 3-0 defeat at bitter rivals Ajax.
The Rotterdammers are now 11 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven, who beat AZ Alkmaar yesterday.
Ajax’s victory moved them back up to second, eight points behind defending champions PSV, thanks to an early goal from defender Johnny Heitinga and a strike at the end of each half from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
FC Groningen missed the chance to climb above Feyenoord and into fourth after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Roda JC – former Millwall player Berry Powel gave Groningen the lead.
FC Utrecht moved up to eighth with a 2-0 win at home to lowly Willem II, while Sparta climbed out of the bottom three after victory by the same scoreline against fellow relegation strugglers VVV Venlo.
