Gerard Pique headed Manchester United’s young guns into an encouraging first-half lead in their Champions League encounter with AS Roma.

The Spain Under-21 international steered home Nani’s 34th-minute corner to leave United on the brink of becoming only the fifth team to complete a 100% record in the group phase.

Although there were reports of trouble outside the stadium, with five United supporters requiring hospital treatment and another two arrested, thankfully there was no repeat of the ugly scenes inside the ground which scarred the last meeting between the sides in April.
