World Cup finalists Italy and France will vie with Holland for a place in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals after being drawn in the same group for next summer’s competition.

World Cup finalists Italy and France will vie with Holland for a place in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals after being drawn in the same group for next summer’s competition.

This morning’s draw in Lucerne saw the Dutch chosen as the top seeds in Group C, and they were soon joined in the pool by France, Romania and world champions Italy.

Group B saw co-hosts Austria pitted against neighbours Germany and Poland, with England’s conquerors Croatia the fourth team in the pool.

Portugal and the Czech Republic will be favourites to progress from Group A, in which Switzerland, hosting the finals with the Austrians, are the top seeds. Turkey complete the quartet.

Reigning champions Greece face a tough task to make it through to the knockout stages after being drawn alongside Spain, Sweden and Russia in Group D.

None of the home nations made it through to the finals.

Euro 2008 draw:

GROUP A: Switzerland, Czech Rep, Portugal, Turkey

GROUP B: Austria, Croatia, Germany, Poland

GROUP C: Netherlands, Italy, Romania, France

GROUP D: Greece, Sweden, Spain, Russia
