Ramos: Sevilla are better off without me
Juande Ramos believes Sevilla will go onto bigger and better things in the future, even though he will no longer be in charge at the Primera Liga club.
Ramos tendered his resignation with Sevilla late last night, heightening speculation he is about to succeed Martin Jol at Tottenham.
Ramos enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Sevilla, winning two UEFA Cups, the Copa del Rey, the European Super Cup and the Spanish Supercopa in just two years.
Prior to that, the club had picked up only four pieces of major silverware in their history, with the most recent being the Copa del Rey crown they won back in 1948.
Sevilla have struggled to hit those heights so far this season, losing five of their 10 league and Champions League group stage matches, but Ramos is confident the club will get back on track and continue to grow well after his departure.
“Sevilla FC is much bigger than a player or a manager,” he said in a message to fans on his official website, www.juanderamos.com.
“The greatness of the fans is something innate, it is impossible to comprehend this passion and devotion if you have not shared it with them, therefore I am convinced that the professional nature and honesty of all of the members of this club will take advantage of my farewell to straighten out the course of a season which has begun with doubts.
“I have just been a part of the machinery which works exceptionally and which will once again obtain the merit of victory this season.
“The professionals are extraordinary, the perspective is enormous. Sevilla FC will be much greater after I have left.”
Ramos, who had been in charge of the Primera Liga outfit since 2005, admits an offer “impossible to refuse” was the reason for his decision to step down.
Although Ramos did not mention which club had made the offer, he did say it came from London and it now seems inevitable he will be unveiled as the new manager at Spurs in the coming days.
