Scolari facing UEFA probe

Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will be investigated by UEFA over his role in the events that marred his side’s European Championship qualifier against Serbia in Lisbon.

Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will be investigated by UEFA over his role in the events that marred his side’s European Championship qualifier against Serbia in Lisbon.

Branko Ivanovic grabbed a 1-1 draw for the Serbians two minutes from time at the Alvalade Stadium last night to cancel out Simao Sabrosa’s free-kick.

The controversy erupted when Scolari intervened in a spat between Portugal midfielder Ricardo Quaresma and Serbia’s Ivica Dragutinovic, who had squared up to each other after the final whistle.

In the heated exchange that followed, TV pictures appeared to show Scolari aiming a punch at Dragutinovic, who was subsequently sent off.

A statement posted on UEFA’s website today read: “Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and the Serbia player Ivica Dragutinovic both face a charge of improper conduct.”

Scolari apologised for his actions in a statement read out at the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).

“I’m not infallible,” he said. “Everyone makes mistakes. I lost my head, but it was because I was protecting my player.

“I would like to apologise to my players, to the Portuguese people, the FPF and UEFA.

“I am prepared for the consequences of my attitude.”

The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body will hear the case on September 19.
