Luton pile on the woes for Roy
Luton Town 3 Sunderland 0
Two unlikely goals by defender Noe Pamarot and a Pompey first for David Nugent clinched a third round Carling Cup place for Portsmouth and provided the first defeat in five matches for League One’s bottom club Leeds at Fratton Park.
Despite a fighting performance and a few near misses Leeds, who began the season with a 15 point deduction for financial irregularities, were no match for Pompey.
The Premier League side left out top stars like Sol Campbell, David James, Sulley Muntari and Kanu and took 42 minutes to break the deadlock with Pamarot’s streaky first goal.
Another shot by Pedro Mendes brought the game to lfe again when the leaping Ankergren tipped over his 20 yard drive in fine style 77th minute corner.
Nugent had another chance when Sylvain Distin went forward to set him up but his shot was wide of the far post.
At least Pompey, with Gary O’Neil replacing Benjani and Utaka swicthiung to the left were finishing the match with a little bit of a flourish and from O’Neil’s corner on 80 minutes Pamarot firmly headed his second goal of the game.
And the sparse crowd raised an even bigger cheer when Nugent sprinted into the area to land his first Pompey goal into an empty net after Utaka’s left-wing run and cross split Leeds wide open with five minutes left.
