Robbie Hedderman was the hero with the crucial penalty in a sudden-death shootout to see Waterford through to the quarter-finals of the FAI Ford Cup after this thriller at the Showgrounds.

Paul McCarthy slid in to shoot home Karl Bermingham's cross to put Blues into a shock seventh minute lead.

Sligo levelled from a stunning Faz Kuduzovic free-kick on 17 minutes.

Gavin Peers was deprived of giving Sligo the lead when shooting against the Blues crossbar before half-time.

But Sligo remained on top and were in front three minutes into the second half.

Kuduzovic's corner was cleared and Matt Judge fired home from 12 yards.

But Blues hit back on 67 minutes when Pat Flynn put Vinny Sullivan in to shoot home off a post.

Both sides could have won it in extra-time before penalties, and Hedderman, decided it.
