Doolin believes Drogs can progress
Drogheda manager Paul Doolin was thrilled with his team’s UEFA Cup fightback against Helsingborgs and believes they can progress after a 1-1 first-leg draw.
Former Celtic, Barcelona and Manchester United striker Henrik Larsson fired the Swedes into a first-half lead in their second qualifying round first leg match at Dalymount Park.
But Eamon Zayed’s well-taken goal after 54 minutes earned the Irish club a thoroughly deserved draw.
And Doolin said afterwards: “Helsingborgs won the first half while we won the second half when I felt we were excellent.
“They are a decent side but we are a decent side away from home. They are as good a side that we have seen here in a while. They move the ball very well.”
Helsingborgs manager Stuart Baxter paid tribute to Larsson.
“Henrik Larsson is still a fine player and his finish was excellent,” said Baxter – who was slightly disappointed not to emerge with a victory.
“A 1-1 draw is always a good result away from home. But If you look at the way the game unfolded we are a bit disappointed not to nick it.
“Drogheda are a difficult team to play against as they play the ball long and very direct. They also play with a lot of aggression.”
