Tevez starts for United
Carlos Tevez made his expected debut for Manchester United in place of injured Wayne Rooney in the Barclays Premier League match against Portsmouth at Fratton Park.
Highly-rated Portuguese youngster Nani was given a full debut after appearing as a substitute in Sunday’s goalless draw against Reading, replacing Frenchman Mikael Silvestre – but there was still no sign of fellow newcomers Owen Hargreaves or Anderson in Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad.
Portsmouth’s task was made even tougher by the absence of new skipper Sol Campbell, who collected a groin injury at Derby on Saturday.
That was a blow, too, for England manager Steve McClaren – who had come to watch the central defender ahead of England’s international against Germany next week.
Pompey had their own debut-maker in former Southampton defender Martin Cranie, while Benjani Mwaruwari and David Nugent kept their starting places up front, with Kanu on the bench.
