Bayern new boys make dazzling start
Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose and Franck Ribery shone on their Bayern Munich debuts as the German giants won decisively against Hansa Rostock on the first Saturday of the 2007-08 Bundesliga.
Looking to reclaim the title they lost to Stuttgart last season, new-look Bayern gave their veteran coach Ottmar Hitzfeld the perfect start with a 3-0 win.
Stuttgart and last season’s second-placed team, Schalke, drew 2-2 in their match yesterday.
Italy striker Toni marked his debut with a goal after only 14 minutes while Germany international Klose did likewise in the 66th minute before rounding things off with his second in the 85th.
Another newcomer, France national team star Ribery, dazzled at the heart of the Bayern midfield and earned a standing ovation from the 69,000 fans at the Allianz Arena.
Werder Bremen threw away a two-goal half-time lead and had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Bochum.
Diego, with a penalty, and Boubacar Sanogo netted late in the first half to put Bremen in charge. However, Stanislav Sestak and Tommy Bechmann hauled the hosts level just four minutes into the second half.
Collin Benjamin’s first-half goal secured a 1-0 victory for Hamburg at Hannover.
Arminia Bielefeld spoiled Felix Magath’s debut at the Wolfsburg helm with a stunning 3-1 away win this afternoon.
Ioannis Amanatidis scored the only goal of the game as Eintracht Frankfurt won at home against Hertha Berlin, while Bayer Leverkusen and visiting Cottbus played out a goalless draw.
