Galway missed a penalty and then had to rely on the heroics of goalkeeper Gary Rogers to hang on for a vital point at The Brandywell tonight.

Third-from-bottom Galway blew a chance to take a 27th minute lead when Dublin referee Richie Winter gave them a penalty after Derek O'Brien had been fouled inside the Derry area by Eddie McCallion.

But former Derry striker Alan Murphy blazed his spot kick over the crossbar.

Derry hit back and might have taken the lead seven minutes later. Rogers parried a shot from Ken Oman and midfielder Ruaidhrí Higgins fired wide from the rebound.

Rogers remained unbeatable throughout the second half with three particularly good saves in quick succession from Mark Farren, Higgins and Ciaran Martyn as Galway held on for a draw.
