Birmingham agree Mido fee

Birmingham look set to make Mido their seventh permanent signing of the summer after agreeing a £6m fee with Tottenham for the Egyptian striker.

The 24-year-old former Roma player has yet to agree personal terms with the midlands club.

A statement on the Birmingham website www.bcfc.com read: “Mido had been rumoured in the media to be joining the club on a season-long loan but Blues can confirm that they are looking to sign the former Ajax, Marseille and Roma hot shot on a permanent deal.”

Mido would join Garry O’Connor, Olivier Kapo, Stuart Parnaby, Fabrice Muamba, Daniel de Ridder and Richard Kingson in joining Blues on permanent deals since winning promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

The striker was very close to moving to Manchester City during the January transfer window but could now be heading to St Andrews, with reports linking compatriot and Spurs club-mate Hossam Ghaly with a move to the midlands club too.

Mido initially joined Spurs on an 18-month loan from Roma before signing for £4.5m in August 2006.

He started only seven league games for the north Londoners after making his move permanent, making five further appearances as a substitute and scoring one goal.

Birmingham have already recouped a portion of the fee likely to be spent on Mido by selling DJ Campbell to Leicester for a fee which could rise to £2.1m.

Campbell becomes the Foxes’ 12th signing of a busy summer and is reunited with his former Brentford manager Martin Allen at the Walkers Stadium.

The 25-year-old is the third player to move from St Andrews to Leicester this summer, following Bruno N’Gotty and Stephen Clemence to the Foxes.

Campbell scored 12 goals last season to help the Blues win promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt and has penned a four-year deal with the Foxes.

Allen brought Campbell into the Football League in the summer of 2005, paying £5,000 to sign him for Brentford from Yeading after he had been part of the side who played Newcastle in the FA Cup third round earlier that year.

And it was another FA Cup showing which prompted Steve Bruce to take him to Birmingham, paying £500,000 for him a year later just three days after he had scored twice to dump Sunderland out of the FA Cup at the fourth round stage.

He failed to score in the rest of the 2005-06 season as the Blues were relegated from the top flight but played a major role in their instant return last season.
