Allardyce gives up on Ben Haim

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce has been forced to abandon his bid to sign Tal Ben Haim after admitting Chelsea have beaten him to it.

Allardyce, who was this morning handed a swift return to former club Bolton when the fixture list for the new season was published, had made the Israel international one of his main targets after replacing Glenn Roeder at St James’ Park.
