The Euro 2008 qualifier between Denmark and Sweden was abandoned tonight after referee Herbert Fandel was attacked by a fan.

The Euro 2008 qualifier between Denmark and Sweden was abandoned tonight after referee Herbert Fandel was attacked by a fan.

With the scores level at 3-3 heading into the final minute, the German official sent off Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen and awarded a penalty to Sweden.

The decision prompted one member of the crowd to run onto the pitch and begin harassing Fandel.

Fandel immediately called a halt to the match, with the result now to be decided by UEFA`s disciplinary committee.

It brought a sour end to what had been an enthralling match in which Sweden had taken a 3-0 lead only for their opponents to stage a stunning fightback.

Johan Elmander opened the scoring after just seven minutes before Petter Hansson`s 30-yard free-kick doubled the advantage after 23 minutes.

Elmander then scored his second of the match three minutes later to seemingly put Sweden in the driving seat.

But Liverpool’s Daniel Agger pulled a goal back in the 34th minute before Jon Dahl Tomasson and substitute Leon Andreasen sealed an unprecedented comeback for the Danes in the second half.

The result will not be confirmed until an investigation by UEFA's disciplinary committee upon receipt of the referee and delegate reports, UEFA said.
