Afonso denies England an opening Wembley win

England 1 Brazil 1

David Beckham made a triumphant comeback as England regained their pride despite Brazil scoring a late equaliser in the first full international at the new Wembley.

The Real Madrid star’s free-kick set up the opening goal for his successor as England skipper – John Terry – after 68 minutes.

Beckham left the pitch after 77 minutes to a standing ovation but in injury-time Diego headed home the equaliser.

It proved to be Terry’s last piece of meaningful action before he left the pitch after 72 minutes to a standing ovation to be replaced by Wes Brown.

Brown’s first involvement almost gifted Brazil an equaliser when he made a mess of cutting out a pass from Ronaldinho and instead played in substitute Afonso but he steered his shot wide of the post.

Wembley rose to its feet again after 77 minutes when Beckham made way for Jermaine Jenas.

Afonso had another chance to snatch an equaliser but headed wide from close range.

Then in injury-time substitute Diego spoilt England’s night when he headed in Gilberto’s centre.
