Abete defends Rome police

Italy’s football supremo on Thursday defended the policemen on duty at the Stadio Olimpico for the clash between Roma and Manchester United.

Italian police have come under fire from the British media for their alleged heavy-handed treatment of United supporters during violent clashes at the game.

Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Giancarlo Abete, who was elected after the violence in Sicily that resulted in the death of a policeman in February, was not at Wednesday’s match but praised the actions of the police in quelling the disturbances.

He said in a statement: “The English press speak of heavy handed police? We owe gratitude to our law enforcers and I don’t believe those who try to make games safe can be crucified in this manner.

“I was not present at the Stadio Olimpico...but I will follow the matter closely.”
