There was no triumphant return to the Ataturk stadium tonight for Liverpool, who ended their Champions League Group C campaign with a tame defeat against Galatasaray.

It gave Galatasaray their first win of the campaign and salvaged some pride for the Turkish champions, just two days after they lost their derby with Fenerbahce.

Liverpool fielded a considerably weakened side for a meaningless match - having already won the group – and were ahead through a Robbie Fowler effort before first-half replies from Necati Ates and Okan Burek. Sasa Ilic added a third, before a Fowler header reduced the margin of victory for the hosts.
