Robben searcing for best

Winger Arjen Robben admits he will never reach perfection as Chelsea prepare to clinch qualification for the knockout stage of the Champions League against Werder Bremen on Wednesday night.

Chelsea are just a draw away from sealing their place in the next phase of the competition and Robben is relishing the prospect of putting more European experience under his belt.

The Holland international, rumoured to be a target for Real Madrid in the summer, is now back to his sizzling best at Stamford Bridge as he looks to push Andriy Shevchenko and Didier Drogba all the way for a place in coach Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up.

But although Robben’s reputation has been enhanced during his time at Stamford Bridge, he knows he will never be the perfect player.

Robben said: “I always go back to when I worked with Gus Hiddink at PSV Eindhoven. He always talked about percentages. He’d tell me that I was at 75 per cent of what I could do as a footballer but that I had to try and reach between 95 and 100.

“I’ll never reach 100 because nobody is perfect. But I took that on board and each year, I just keep pushing myself.

“But it’s about consistency really – it’s no good when you play two great games and then two not so good.

“For an attacking player like me that can be a bit harder. But nobody has ever had to push me or motivate me from the outside.”

However, as he looks forward to helping Chelsea qualify for the next stage against the German side, Robben does acknowledge the work put in by Mourinho.

He added: “When you play at a top club like Chelsea, you play in top games with top players and you get to work with a great manager.

“I’ve learned a lot from him and the way he thinks about football. it’s just a case of picking out the things I need for my own game. You can always learn from others.”

Boss Mourinho is unlikely to make too many changes to his line-up against Bremen as he knows one point will be enough to guarantee them a place in the next round as group winners.

Mourinho added: “We are top of our group with a three-point lead and two games to go. We need just a draw in Bremen to win the group.”
