Drogheda finish third
Drogheda United 1 Waterford United 0
Declan O’Brien scored a vital winner as Drogheda leapfrogged Cork City to finish third and guarantee their places in Europe and the Setanta Sports Cup for next season.
O’Brien struck for the only goal of the game on 59 minutes when getting on the end of Shane Barrett’s cross to head past Ben Spicer.
Bottom of the table Waterford put it up to Drogheda in the first half with the wind at their backs and Alan Cawley twice brought good saves from Dan Connor with long range shots.
In between, Barrett was the main Drogheda threat, forcing an important save from Spicer before his cross from the left came back off the crossbar.
