Wayne Rooney has hailed England team-mate Steven Gerrard as one of the world’s best midfielders and wishes the Liverpool star could play at Manchester United.

Gerrard’s form has been questioned since Liverpool suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss to Rooney’s United at Old Trafford on Sunday but the striker has no doubts over his class.

Rooney, who turned 21 today, said: “He’s probably the driving force at Liverpool and he is one of the best midfielders in the world.

“I think if Liverpool lost him they wouldn’t be half the team they are with him.

“I can’t really describe him because there isn’t another player like him.

“I’d love to see him come to United but I don’t think that will ever happen!”
