Newcastle midfielder Kieron Dyer could be back in action later this month.

The 27-year-old England international is expected to return to training in nine days’ time after a lengthy struggle against the hamstring problems which have blighted his career.

That will come as a huge boost to manager Glenn Roeder, who has worked all summer in an attempt to strengthen his attacking resources since the retirement of captain Alan Shearer and Michael Owen’s knee injury.

Dyer has been in London working with a specialist as his rehabilitation draws to a close, and will hope he has finally beaten the condition which has threatened his career.

Roeder said: “Kieron is very close to coompleting his rehabilitation and we are looking forward to him working with us again from a week on Monday.

“And if things go to plan and he has no reaction, we could have him back on the field again within a fortnight.

“But we are not getting too excited. Do not forget, we have been down this route before with Kieron Dyer, so we will be keeping things calm and just taking things from day to day.

“After that, hopefully he will get lucky and we will get lucky. But I must say that at the moment, the indications are that we could have Kieron back with us.”

Dyer’s problems have been exacerbated by his medication for a congenital condition which makes him vulnerable to hamstring problems.
