Boruc cautioned for crossing himself

Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc has been cautioned after blessing himself during an Old Firm match, it emerged tonight.

The Polish player, 26, was playing against Rangers at Ibrox on February 12 when fans complained to Strathclyde Police that he openly crossed himself in the Copland Road end.

The incident was said to have taken place at the start of the second half of the game.

Police investigated the complaints and submitted a report to the Procurator Fiscal.

The Crown Office said Boruc’s behaviour had taken place before a crowd in the charged atmosphere of an Old Firm match and provoked alarm and crowd trouble. As such it constituted a breach of the peace.

However, it is understood that as an alternative to prosecution, the Pole has been cautioned, leaving him with a criminal record.

The goalkeeper, who played during this year’s World Cup in Germany, signed for Celtic from Legia Warsaw in July last year.
