No fear for Derry boss Kenny
Derry City boss Stephen Kenny believes a positive approach is essential if his side are to complete a stunning UEFA Cup first qualifying round win over former winners Gothenburg at the Brandywell tomorrow night.
Sean Hargan’s late header grabbed the Eircom League side a famous 1-0 victory at the Ullevi Stadium a fortnight ago, but Kenny is convinced any attempt to cling onto that advantage would cost his side dear.
Kenny said: “It is important that we believe in ourselves, show no fear and continually strive to cause Gothenburg problems.
“We respect the fact they are a formidable opponent but we certainly will not go out with an inferiority complex. Ideally we will create scoring opportunities and record another historic night,” Kenny told the Derry Journal.
Defender Peter Hutton and midfielder Killian Brennan are struggling with knee injuries but the likes of Stephen O’Flynn, Mark Farren and Ciaran Martyn are standing by to step in.
Eircom League side Drogheda have the chance to claim a famous scalp against HJK Helsinki after coming desperately close to earning a first leg advantage a fortnight ago.
Drogheda will fancy their chances after Shane Robinson’s superb first half strike gave them the advantage in Finland only for Markus Halsti to salvage a draw for the home side six minutes from time.
Glentoran face a mighty challenge as they bid to overturn a 1-0 first leg deficit and stage a dramatic comeback to see off Norwegian league leaders SK Brann in Bergen.
Meanwhile Portadown are intent on salvaging some pride as they head to Lithuanian side Kaunas on the back of a 3-1 first leg deficit.
