Jurgen Klinsmann has resigned as coach of Germany. The 41-year-old has decided not to continue in the role despite leading his team to a brilliant third in the World Cup.

The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed his decision this morning and named Joachim Low as his replacement.

Klinsmann met DFB president Theo Zwanziger and Germany team manager Oliver Bierhoff last night to tell them he did not wish to extend his contract, which expired after the World Cup.

Klinsmann took charge of the side after the departure of another former Germany striker, Rudi Voller, two years ago.

He now hands over to Low, whom he admitted had played a major part in the preparations for each game at the World Cup.

Low will take on the full responsibility for the side having agreed a contract until the end of Euro 2008.

His job will commence on September 2 with a Euro 2008 qualifier against Ireland in Stuttgart, which has already been declared a sell-out.
