World Cup co-ordinator shot himself after final

The World Cup co-ordinator for the Berlin city government shot himself in the head in an apparent suicide attempt just hours after the final, police said today.

Juergen Kiessling, 65, shot himself hours after the tournament ended on Sunday, police spokeswoman Claudia Schulz said, confirming newspaper reports.

Kiessling is fighting for his life in a Berlin hospital, the Bild daily reported.

Schulz said there was no indication anyone else was involved, but had no information on a possible motive.

Mr Kiessling was known as ‘Mister WM’ (Mr World Cup) by colleagues in Berlin and was responsible for the Fan Mile in Berlin city centre, a hugely successful concourse where giant screens showed the matches for fans who could not get tickets.
