The World Cup final in Berlin between Italy and France went into extra-time with the scores deadlocked at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Zinedine Zidane’s seventh-minute penalty, awarded for a foul by Marco Materazzi on Florent Malouda, went in off the underside of the bar as the 34-year-old playmaker – in his last match for his country – fooled goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon with a chipped spot-kick.

However, Materazzi redeemed himself when he headed home an Andrea Pirlo corner after 19 minutes.

Luca Toni’s header rattled the crossbar in the first-half and then he had a goal disallowed in the second period.
