England struggled to move out of second gear and only the woodwork denied Ecuador taking a shock half-time lead in their World Cup second-round tie in Stuttgart.

Former Southampton striker Agustin Delgado had his shot deflected on to the bar after Ashley Cole made a superb last-ditch tackle.

Frank Lampard had England’s best attempt on goal, a low drive saved by Cristian Mora, but it was another unconvincing display by Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side.
