Charlton unveil Dowie as manager
Charlton have unveiled Iain Dowie as their new manager.
Dowie expressed his delight at returning to the Premiership with Palace's south-east London neighbours.
âThey match my energy and passion for making the football club a good place to be,â Dowie said on Sky Sports News.
He stressed that prior to leaving Palace no discussions had taken place with Charlton.
âNot at all,â said Dowie. âThe first conversation I had with Charlton was two days after.
âI found them very enthusiastic and I was one of several people they interviewed.â
The task of leading Charlton, who finished 13th in last seasonâs Premiership, is one which Dowie is looking forward to starting, and he promised supporters that the team would attempt to play football with style.
He said: âThey want to see me put a side on the pitch who play attractive football and hopefully weâll add to what Alan (Curbishley) brought here.â
Amid questioning about his decision to make the controversial move, Dowie declared: âThe easy thing would have been not to come here. Iâve taken what is a fantastic opportunity for me.â
Palace were relegated after a draw against Charlton in May 2005, and Dowie is familiar with the existing playing squad.
âI know a great deal about them. A year ago we (Palace) had a dark day here.
âThere are one or two standout individuals but everyone can start with a clean slate.â
Charlton chairman Richard Murray was delighted to get his man, and admitted Dowie might not have become available had Palace not conceded a late equaliser to the Addicks in the last match of the 2004-05 season.
âIf Jonathan Fortune hadnât got that goal before the end I probably wouldnât be sitting here and Iain would be considered a legend at Crystal Palace,â said Murray.
âWeâre really excited about him joining.â
