Gold angered by Cunningham remarks
Chairman David Gold has dismissed claims from former Birmingham skipper Kenny Cunningham that he will walk out on the club following their relegation from the Premiership.
Central defender Cunningham launched a stinging attack on City, including Gold and co-owner David Sullivan, after being told he was being released after four years at St Andrews.
Gold was particularly upset at claims from the former Republic of Ireland skipper that the current owners have no passion for City and that the club has no soul.
He said: “Kenny Cunningham makes remarks about us (David and Ralph Gold and Sullivan) walking away from Birmingham City at the same time. That simply isn’t going to happen.
“For a start, my share in the club is separate from David Sullivan’s which means if he decides to sell up, the Golds will remain.
“We are not joined at the hip and we are certainly not husband and wife! We’re two different people and shouldn’t be spoken of as one.”
Gold admitted: “I accept that Cunningham may have some evidence to base things on as far as David Sullivan is concerned in the sense of he has often talked of buying into a club nearer to his home in Essex, but I haven’t done that so don’t tar me with the same brush.”
Gold added: “I am very angry about a lot of the things that Kenny said, particularly about this club having no soul and that the owners have no passion for Birmingham City.
“That is rubbish. To say I have no passion for this club is outrageous. I also wonder if Kenny would have said the same things if we had stayed up and he had been given a lucrative new contract to stay at Birmingham.”
