Chelsea clinched the Premiership title but Wayne Rooney was carried from the pitch on a stretcher with his World Cup dreams in doubt.

Injury to Manchester United’s England star, just 42 days before England start their World Cup bid, marred the championship party at Stamford Bridge.

Goals from William Gallas, Joe Cole and Ricardo Carvalho gave Chelsea a thumping win over their nearest rivals and their second league title in two years.

But the injury to Rooney, hurt in a fair tackle from Paulo Ferreira, 12 minutes from time, is a massive shock for England.

Carvalho made it three when he finished a counter-attack with a fierce drive past Van der Sar.

It was the first Premiership goal of the season for the defender who is thought to be on his way out of the club in the summer.

Rooney was injured in the 78th minute as he chased a ball into the Chelsea penalty area.

Ferreira timed his tackle well and won the ball but Rooney tumbled awkwardly and he clutched his right foot in apparent agony.

It looked serious and he was applauded by the 42,000 crowd as he was carried off on a stretcher.

To make matters worse for England, Terry ended the game hobbling badly.
