Van Buyten double puts Hamburg through in UEFA Cup
An unlikely double from former Manchester City defender Daniel van Buyten was enough to take Hamburg past FC Thun and into the last 16 of the UEFA Cup.
The Germans were seeking to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg in Switzerland and got a great start with Van Buyten slotting home with barely a minute on the clock at the AOL Arena.
The Belgium international then put Hamburg in front in the tie with a 33rd-minute header and they hung on despite the late dismissal of Czech midfielder David Jarolim.
Zenit St Petersburg came from behind to clinch their passage with a 2-1 home victory over Rosenborg.
Vidar Riseth opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time to give Rosenborg hope of cancelling out their 2-0 first-leg deficit, but Alexander Kerzhakov equalised 10 minutes later and Igor Denisov hit a late winner.
Lille held on for a goalless draw at Shakhtar Donetsk to clinch a 3-2 aggregate win.
Strasbourg also had a goalless draw, at home to Bulgaria’s Litex Lovech, and went through 2-0 on aggregate.
Heerenveen suffered a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Steaua Bucharest in Romania and Steaua’s city rivals Rapid also progressed, adding at 2-0 win to their single goal victory from the first leg.
Levski Sofia won 2-0 win at home to Artmedia Bratislava, Palermo went through against Slavia Prague on away goals after a 2-2 draw in Italy.
