Butt apology over walkout

Nicky Butt has issued a public apology for walking out on Birmingham before their Barclays Premiership defeat at West Ham.

Butt left the team hotel and returned to Birmingham on his own after being told he was not in the squad.

The former Manchester United midfielder said in a statement: “Last night, having been informed that I was not to be a part of the West Ham game, I made a decision that I regret, a decision that was made on the spur of the moment and while I was feeling totally dejected. It was the wrong decision and unacceptable.

“Therefore, I would like to apologise unreservedly to the manager, coaching staff, team-mates and fans for my actions.

“There is no doubt we are in a battle and it is important that we all stick together,” added Butt.

“I want to be a part of that and make a contribution to Birmingham City staying in the Premier League.”

Butt had been dropped for the game, which Birmingham lost 3-0, as manager Steve Bruce fielded a side with his own son Alex, normally a defender, playing in midfield.

The Blues boss had promised Butt’s walkout would be dealt with internally and the player is now expected to face a club fine.
