FIFA chief warns of Nations Cup security fears

FIFA’s head of security Walter Gagg has warned of a potential disaster if stadium safety at the African Nations Cup is not improved.

Gagg voiced his concerns following chaotic scenes at the Cairo International Stadium when hosts Egypt played Ivory Coast on Saturday.

It is reported thousands of people got into the stadium to watch the game without tickets.

Gagg told BBC Sport: “It is crucial, we have to make sure for the coming matches security, not only inside but outside the stadium.

“We do not want a tragedy but here there is a risk that something could happen. There will be a full house at Egypt’s next game, so it’s absolutely necessary there are changes ahead of the match.”

Egypt are due to play the Democratic Republic of Congo in the same stadium in the quarter-finals on Friday.
