Mido injury mars Egypt win
Tottenham striker Mido is doubtful for Egypt’s African Nations Cup quarter-final after limping out of the 3-1 win over Ivory Coast.
Egypt finished top of the group thanks to goals by Emad Moteab (two) and Mohamed Aboutrika after Arouna Kone had briefly levelled in the first half at the Cairo International Stadium.
Morocco were eliminated from the competition after a goalless draw with Libya, whose own hopes of progressing had already been dashed before kick-off.
Egypt’s win means Ivory Coast finish second and face the winner of Group B - likely to be Cameroon.
A deserved goal came in the eighth minute for Egypt when Abdelzaher El Saqqa headed Mohamed Abdelwahab’s corner back across goal and Emad Moteab reacted swiftly to head in from a yard out.
Mido’s impressive performance was halted abruptly by a groin injury in the 23th minute and he was replaced by veteran striker Hossam Hassan.
Kone’s ingenuity finally paid off two minutes before half-time when he found space after being played in by Bonaventure Kalou. The PSV Eindhoven striker turned and fired in a deflected shot which caught Al Hadari off his line.
Egypt restored their lead shortly after the hour mark when Aboutrika volleyed home expertly.
And Egypt sealed their quarter-final place in the 69th minute, Moteab stabbing home after his shot had been saved.
Even if Morocco had seen off their opponents they would have failed to progress with Egypt winning.
Morocco came closest to breaking the deadlock when Mohammed El Yagoubi struck the post with a left-footed effort from the edge of the box.
A series of petulant challenges from both sides marred the match but substitute Ali Boussaboun’s low shot forced Alejandro to make a good save at his near post.
