Barnwell: Eriksson exit inevitable
Managers’ union chief John Barnwell has admitted Sven-Goran Eriksson’s departure as England coach was “inevitable”.
In the wake of his indiscreet comments to a ’Fake Sheikh’ Sunday newspaper journalist, Eriksson confirmed last night he intends to quit the England job once the 2006 World Cup campaign is over.
While the news is not a total surprise, the announcement so far in advance of the tournament has shocked many, with some feeling the move will be detrimental to England’s chances of lifting the trophy this summer.
Even Barnwell accepts the timing is not ideal, but, given Eriksson’s indiscretions, he does not see how the Football Association could have reacted any differently.
“The decision of the Football Association appeared inevitable,” he told www.leaguemanagers.com
“It is not ideal for anybody and the timing is less than satisfactory.
“Having said that, the decision has been taken and we must look positively to the immediate future of the England team.
“We would expect our managers to continue to give their full co-operation to ensure the success of the national team in the forthcoming World Cup.”
