Former Hearts chairman dies

The former Hearts chairman Wallace Mercer has died, according to a statement from the club.

Mr Mercer passed away this afternoon at Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital following a short battle with cancer. He was 59.

A colourful and often controversial character, he spent 13 years at Tynecastle before selling his shares to Chris Robinson and Leslie Deans in 1994.

Hearts chairman and acting chief executive Roman Romanov said: ``Our deepest sympathies go out to Wallace's family.

“I had the pleasure of his company on a number of occasions and found him to be a true gentlemen.

“He was a great Hearts man who will always be in the hearts and minds of all directors, players and fans.

“He worked tirelessly to make Hearts a great club and dedicated so much of his time and energy in doing so.

“We are all deeply saddened by this loss however he will always remain part of Hearts family.”

A statement released by Mr Mercer`s family read: "It is with great sadness and regret that the family of Wallace Mercer announce that Mr Mercer passed away this afternoon, Tuesday, January 17, in the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, after a short and courageous battle against cancer.

“Mr Mercer, who was 59, is survived by his wife Anne, his daughter Helen, his son Iain, and by two grand-children.

“The family extend their thanks to medical and nursing staff for their excellent care, compassion, and dedication throughout his illness, and would now appreciate it if they were allowed a period of private mourning.

“Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.”
