Alan Shearer blasted home the record-equalling 200th goal of his Newcastle career to spare his side’s blushes and Graeme Souness after a major FA Cup scare against Coca-Cola League Two Mansfield.

The 35-year-old drew level with the great Jackie Milburn via his 80th-minute strike, after Peter Shirtliff’s side had threatened to leave Tyneside with at least a replay.

Stags goalkeeper Kevin Pressman barely had a shot to save as the Magpies laboured for much of the game, while Shay Given had to produce fine stops to deny Allan Russell before the break and Adam Rundle just after it.
