Wigan put off by Ashton price
Wigan claim to have been quoted a “silly money” asking price by Norwich after reviving their interest in Canaries striker Dean Ashton.
The England Under-21 striker attracted interest from the Latics and Manchester City during the summer, and according to reports the Carrow Road club could have to fend off more offers during the January transfer window.
Wigan approached the Coca-Cola Championship side for a second time but were given little encouragement.
“We’ve asked again but with the price they’re asking, it’s silly money as they don’t want to sell him,” Wigan boss Paul Jewell told Sky Sports News.
“I understand that. Just because we’re doing well and because the chairman (Dave Whelan) has got a few quid, I’m not going to pay too far over the odds for players, and at that price we won’t be interested.”
Ashton, who turned 22 last month, became Norwich’s record signing in January when he joined in a £3m move from Crewe.
The striker impressed in the Premiership with seven goals in 16 appearances but could not keep Norwich in the top flight.
He has netted 10 in 25 league matches this season, including a hat-trick against Southampton on December 17.
