Sven backs Fergie

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has backed Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson to emerge from the crisis gripping Old Trafford.

The 2-1 defeat by Benfica in midweek saw United crash out of the Champions League, with the club's early exit costing them an estimated £15m (€22.3m).

It is the first time since 1995 United will not compete in Europe after Christmas and the capitulation at the Stadium of Light has heaped further pressure on under-fire Ferguson.

But Eriksson believes United’s problems will pass and predicted Ferguson will remain manager despite mounting speculation his Old Trafford reign is coming to an end.

“You should absolutely not criticise Alex Ferguson because of everything he’s done at the club,” the Swede told Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek programme.

“He’s been fantastic. Year on year United compete at the highest level. All teams dip now and then.

“United will come back very quickly and Ferguson will come back very quickly for sure.”
