Real coach: Beckham should have kept his cool
England captain David Beckham was told today he should have kept his cool following his red card for Real Madrid against Gatafe last night.
The 30-year-old midfielder was dismissed early in the second half of Real’s 1-0 win at the Bernabeu and was then involved in an angry exchange with opposition coach Bernd Schuster on the sidelines.
Beckham was guilty of nothing more than a rash challenge on striker Riki but the greater concern may be that he did not leave quietly and confronted Schuster before heading down the tunnel.
It was the seventh sending-off of Beckham’s career and the third this season after red cards in a World Cup qualifier against Austria and a Primera Liga game against Valencia in October.
Madrid coach Wanderley Luxemburgo told www.realmadrid.com: “He is a player that has character and he made a mistake at that time. He should have been more cool.
“Beckham’s sending-off was bad because you can not leave a team like that. To think he was looking to be booked on purpose is another matter.
“It was a difficult time and he was trying to do something good but he made a mistake.
“We will analyse internally his sending-off but I will not consider the possibility that he did it on purpose.”
It had been suggested in Spain that if Beckham was booked he would miss matches and be able to rest his injured back.
Spanish media reports suggest Luxemburgo is on the verge of being sacked.
Juan Roman Lopez Caro, coach of Real’s feeder team Castilla, is rumoured to be the man who will replace Luxemburgo.
