Referee jailed for match fixing

Referee Robert Hoyzer has been jailed for two years and five months for his role in the match-fixing scandal which rocked German football.

The severity of the ruling comes as a surprise as the prosecution recommended a suspended sentence of two years. However, the judge decided to impose a custodial punishment.

Croatian gambler Ante Sapina was adjudged to have been the ringleader and he was jailed for two years and 11 months while another former referee, Dominik Marks, was given a suspended 18-month sentence.

Sapina’s brothers, Milan and Filip, were also given suspended sentences - Milan for 16 months and Filip for one year.
