Toshack won't 'gloss over' Wales display

The honeymoon period is very definitely over for new boss John Toshack after a shambolic performance in Limassol that saw the minnows from Cyprus toying with Wales at times as they comfortably claimed victory.

Toshack has just completed his first year in control of his country, and has spent it searching diligently through the ranks of Welsh football at every professional level looking for new blood and inspiration.

The Welsh public understands the predicament. Anyone who took over from Mark Hughes would have had to replace an ageing team and that is what Toshack has done, sifting through almost 70 players at U21 and senior levels in eight months.

But if any Hughes side had played as badly as this, the critics who had been championing Toshack’s claims to the job, would have been demanding action and certainly a sacking.

Exactly who gets the blame now for this is open to debate. Did the manager get it wrong or did the players fall short in terms of application and desire?

Either way, any more displays like this will not be tolerated and Toshack is now expected to spend the next four months waiting for his next match on March 1, striving to put things right.

“It was anything but an international performance. It was way, way down the on the level needed for international matches,” said Toshack.
