Award crowns Jewell
Wigan boss Paul Jewell has been named Barclays Manager of the Month for September while Danny Murphy has won the player award.
Jewell’s Wigan, promoted to the Premiership last season, were unbeaten last month and currently sit eighth in the table after beating West Brom and Everton while drawing with Middlesbrough.
Murphy, meanwhile, was tipped by many to be included in the recent England squad for the final World Cup qualifiers against Austria and Poland after his impressive start to the season for Charlton.
Sven-Goran Eriksson did not select the 28-year-old but his form has been recognised by the Barclays awards panel, which includes representatives from football’s governing bodies, the media and fans.
Jim Hytner, from the panel, said: “Wigan have bounced back from their opening day defeat to Chelsea in spectacular style and Paul Jewell deserves a lot of credit for putting such a good run together so early in the season.
“His attacking style of play has secured the points on the pitch, he’s also winning plenty of plaudits off the pitch from both supporters and pundits.
“Danny Murphy is in the prime of his career, Alan Curbishley will be a very happy man if he remains in this sort of form for the rest of the season. The Addicks have been one of the success stories of the season so far.”
