Ronaldinho king of Europe with hat-trick
A stunning Ronaldinho hat-trick fired Barcelona to a 4-1 win over Udinese at the Nou Camp – maintaining the Spanish side’s 100% record in Champions League Group C.
Barca’s Brazilian broke the deadlock with a free-kick after 13 minutes but Udinese levelled through Felipe after poor defending.
The hosts were quickly back in front after Ronaldinho knocked in a Samuel Eto’o pass and Deco added a third on the stroke of half-time through a free-kick.
Ronaldinho then converted his third from the penalty spot after he had been brought down on 89 minutes.
Panathinaikos earned their first Champions League win of the season, beating Werder Bremen 2-1 after a lightning two-goal start in Athens.
The Greek club scored twice in three first-half minutes, Ezekiel Gonzalez putting away a penalty and Vangelis Mantzios striking the second with the match just eight minutes old. The Germans pulled one back through Miroslav Klose.
In Arsenal's group, Selver Hodzic's last-minute goal gave FC Thun a first Champions League win ever as they snatched a 1-0 victory against an uninspired Sparta Prague.
The Swiss minnows would probably have been happy enough with the stalemate which looked likely before Hodzic popped up at the far post to grab all three points.
Manchester United’s win against Benfica was made sweeter after Villarreal drew 0-0 with Lille in a dull encounter at the Stade de France.
Apart from the opening minutes, neither side was able to create chances from open play and the main danger always came from set pieces.
Meanwhile, Juventus claimed a comfortable 3-0 victory against Rapid Vienna at the Delle Alpi Stadium.
David Trezeguet fired the Bianconeri into a 27th-minute lead and then late goals from former Chelsea man Adrian Mutu and Zlatan Ibrahimovic clinched the win.
Bayern Munich needed Martin Demichelis’ 32nd minute header to secure a 1-0 victory over Club Brugge, but the scoreline failed to reflect the Germans’ dominance as they could have won by many more.
