Horsfield bags new deal

West Brom striker Geoff Horsfield has signed a new two-year contract.

The 31-year-old former Birmingham, Wigan and Fulham frontman scored twice in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Portsmouth.

That laid down a challenge to £3m (€4.4m) new signing Nathan Ellington and Wales international Robert Earnshaw, and served notice of Horsfield’s determination to keep his place.

While he keeps scoring, boss Bryan Robson will stay faithful to the Barnsley-born player.

“Geoff deserved a new contract and this will take him up to the age of 33,” Robson told club website www.wba.co.uk. "The way he has gone about his job since I’ve been here has been very good.”

Robson took charge at the Hawthorns in November last year and Horsfield helped Albion to safety by scoring in the final-day 2-0 victory over Portsmouth, a result which took the team from bottom of the table to 17th.

“He works hard, looks very sharp and he has scored some very important goals for us,” said Robson.

“This is reward for that and I’m delighted he’s signed for another two years.”

Horsfield was a £1m (€1.4m) signing from Wigan in December 2003 and his new deal keeps him at the club until the end of June 2007.
