Kenwright hails 'ambassador' Neville

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright believes new signing Phil Neville can help elevate the whole club to a higher level.

The 28-year-old has moved to Goodison Park for a fee believed to be around £3.5m (€5m) after spending 18 years with Manchester United.

At Old Trafford he rose through the youth ranks to eventually make 386 appearances for the club and earn over 50 caps for England.

After agreeing terms with Neville and his father, who acts as the player’s representative, Kenwright could not hide his admiration for the model professional.

Kenwright told www.evertonfc.com: “It has been a real pleasure, and indeed a breath of fresh air, dealing with the Neville family.

“I have an instinct that we have signed a terrific ambassador for Everton Football Club both on and off the field.”

Neville admitted it was “the most difficult decision of his life” to leave Old Trafford and is now set to face United on the opening day of the Premiership season.

He told www.manutd.com: “This was a mutual decision between myself and the manager (Alex Ferguson).

“I’ve spent 18 years of my life at the club and I would like to thank Sir Alex, all the players and the fans for their great support. I am now going to give the same commitment to Everton, David Moyes and the Everton fans. I can’t wait for the new season to get started.”

Neville leaves with Ferguson’s abiding admiration for his professionalism over the years.

“This was not a decision we wanted to make, but every time I picked the team and Phil’s name was not on the teamsheet, it was very difficult for me,” said the United boss.

“You couldn’t meet a better professional and he leaves with the gratitude of everyone at the the club for his service to United. I wish all the best to Phil and his family.”

Everton boss David Moyes believes Neville’s ability to play in a number of roles will be a crucial factor for the club in the coming campaign.

“Phil is a quality footballer who will, I feel certain, improve and enhance the squad we are putting together,” he told www.evertonfc.com.

“Primarily I see Phil as a holding midfield player but he is so versatile that he gives us not only much-needed cover but also several additional options.”

Meanwhile, Everton are “very optimistic” that influential midfielder Tim Cahill will sign a new long-term deal.

Talks have resumed between the club, who begin their Champions League campaign next week, and the player’s representatives.
