Trotters to seal Borgetti deal

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce is confident of completing the signing of Mexico striker Jared Borgetti within the next few days.

The 31-year-old, who currently plays for Pachuca in his home country, arrived at the Reebok Stadium on Friday for talks and a medical with a view to completing a move which would cost Bolton in the region of £1m ( €1.5m).

Allardyce told the club’s official website www.bwfc.co.uk: “He’ll have a medical and there will be talks over personal terms so there’s still a way to go with it, but at least he’s with us now.

“We’ve not agreed everything yet with his club but there’s not an awful lot to sort out on that side.”

Prior to this summer’s Confederations Cup, Borgetti – who scored with a terrific header against Italy at the 2002 World Cup – had 31 goals for his country in 65 appearances.

“We saw Borgetti in the Confederations Cup, where we had two scouts covering the tournament for us,” explained Allardyce.

“They were impressed with what they saw, so, when we found out he wanted to play in the Premiership, we moved in.

“We had a lot of trouble at first with so many different agents trying to get involved and we had to cut through all that stuff. But he’s arrived now.”

Allardyce has linked up with the rest of the Trotters squad in Thailand for the FA Premier League Asia Trophy but insists he will not hesitate to come back if he is needed to secure a deal for Borgetti.

“Obviously it’s not done and dusted yet and if I need to be there to sort anything out, I’ll fly back because I don’t want to miss out on this one like we did with Yossi Benayoun. We let him go after we had spoken to him and we lost him to West Ham.

“We don’t want any other clubs taking players off us again.”
