Ballack fires hosts to thrilling win

Germany have claimed third place in the Confederations Cup with an extra-time victory against Mexico this evening.

Michael Ballack fired home a free-kick in extra time to claim third place for the host nation.

Mexico had come back three times against the Germans.

Podolski had given Germany the lead only for Fonseca to equalise on 40 minutes. Bastian Schweinsteiger restored the Germans' lead a minute later only for Jared Borgetti to score on 58 minutes.

Chelsea's Robert Huth put the Germans ahead again on 79 minutes but Borgetti scored his second with five minutes remaining.

But just seven minutes into extra time, Ballack scored the winner, a curling free kick past Mexican goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez.
